My issue now with products is planned obsolescence. Any things aren’t made to last like they used to. They also have extra technology in them making them harder to repair. Appliances, cars and more.

Food banks are a godsend in these situations. Don’t donate money. Find a local community center that offers assistance and donate foodstuffs. Things like rice, canned beans and mixed veggies are always welcome.
Landless2029@lemmy.worldto A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•More Americans are financing groceries with buy now, pay later loans — and more are paying those bills late, survey says54·4 days agoI’ve been there. It’s expensive to be poor with little to no way out.
You need a car to work. Cars are expensive. You get a old clunker.
You work and live check to check. Maybe $50 or $100 left over after taxes and expenses. Not really possible to have an emergency fund.
A single injury or car breaking down and you need to borrow money. From family, friends or some shitty company.Oh and then your yearly raise comes around at $1/hr that barely covers your rent increasing let alone inflation.

For the folding company could make it part of declaring bankruptcy. Standard paperwork.
Either release all your source or prep the needful. Once this is common and expected could even force companies to maintain a public branch to release on cue.
Owning IP is fine. Products ending up in a landfill due to software is not.
Hopefully the law also expands to actually owning all of a product you own. Not paying BMW to unlock the heated seats already in the car you fully paid for.

The article calls out annual household income. Meaning that could be combined income.
A single person making 120k and couple making 60k x2 is not equivalent. Health insurance and living expenses creep up.

Landless2029@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•OpenPin is an open-source project to revive Humane's dead Ai Pin - LiliputingEnglish36·6 days agoI feel like there should be a law to release the bits we need to support these efforts.
Too many times a product will die or a company will fold along with all its documentation.
Maybe release a final firmware opening up a product. Or at the very least a git repo with api documentation.

I now possess the knowledge about generating power to life off the grid using old motors salvaged from a junkyard thanks to my own personal research and video tutorials.
My intent with bringing that up is the hope of the existence of a document covering this topic in a preppers backup.
In a post apocalyptic scenario humanity has been proven to band together in groups and cooperate to survive. It’s less murder/greed and more sharing/helping. In these small groups it would only take one prepper or even an engineer to setup a generator or even just get solar panels to hookup for basic electricity.
Many of these points could be moot in a nuclear scenario where were dealing with EMPs and radiation.
Landless2029@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Sales of Hard Drives for the End of the World Boom Under TrumpEnglish1·6 days agoYeah my first thought was wondering what community projects exist to generate a guide to download all this info. I knew you could download all of Wikipedia but not the rest.
Landless2029@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Sales of Hard Drives for the End of the World Boom Under TrumpEnglish51·6 days agoI’ve seen people make power generators using old washing machine motors. Youtube is full of them. Cutting PVC pipes to make wind ones and even water based ones off of rivers.
I feel like some people would figure out basic electrical grids for led lights in homes at night and possibly a battery bank made of car batteries or something.
Getting a laptop working in that environment wouldn’t be too far of a stretch. Just need to find an old brother laser printer and a Linux USB and you’re golden.
Print off the critical farming/water treatment stuff you need and power it off.

Landless2029@lemmy.worldto Europe@feddit.org•New Refrigerators, Washing Machines, Furniture and Tires Will All Have to Last Longer, Europe MandatesEnglish3·11 days agoYeah but imagine if we had a laptop motherboard standard like desktops.
Instead of ATX it would be something like MLF - Modular Laptop Framework
Where there would be some board standard for laptop boards.
Then you get screen ribbon standards, keyboard ribbon standards, etc.
This would allow one to order a laptop case with screen, keyboard and touchpad. But you can pick your board, cpu, ram.
I know some companies have done GPU upgrades but how nice would it be to upgrade your 4 year old $3k laptop’s GPU?
Landless2029@lemmy.worldto Europe@feddit.org•New Refrigerators, Washing Machines, Furniture and Tires Will All Have to Last Longer, Europe MandatesEnglish3·11 days agoAgreed but in most larger businesses swap out the laptops around 3-5 years.
Consumers use laptop 5-10+ until they die.
Landless2029@lemmy.worldto Europe@feddit.org•New Refrigerators, Washing Machines, Furniture and Tires Will All Have to Last Longer, Europe MandatesEnglish17·11 days agoBullshit. My aunt has a washing machine with all knobs and switches that’s probably 30+ years old and it still works fine.
They need to stop putting all these digital components into washing machines or make the boards standardized so they can be easily swapped out. These aren’t laptops that you toss after 3-5 years. Appliances should last 10-20 years.

You can even take the website and “add to homepage” on android effectively making it a webapp.
I don’t know why people install apps…
She sounds like a single issue voter.
Thats really the biggest problem. People not looking at the whole candidate.
