  • it’s the social features and the network effect. if you want to make a playlist and share it with your friends the easiest way to get them to listen to it is to host it on spotify. also blends, collaborative playlist, jams, and now listening all provide the illusion of connection through a shared listening experience. and it’s not so much that these things are better than what we used to have for sharing music, it’s that corporations have all killed our ways of sharing music. that’s what they really hated about groove shark. artists made more money in the groove shark era, but umg, sony, and warner didn’t control how we shared on it.

  • Their propaganda methods are also meant to make everyone feel alone. For the conservatives, it makes them feel powerful, like this is all working, like they’re the self reliant culture warriors they always dreamed of being. For the empathetic, it makes us feel like we don’t have enough power to band together and resist them. That’s why right now songs and soup are everything. They make you feel like you’re connected to whoever taught you the song, sings the song with you, or that you teach the song to. The soup fills your belly and gives you the energy to power forward, and the soup you make is also one of the few true choices you have in desperate times. You’re surrounded by the illusion of choice, but soup, soup is something we the underclasses own. You can put anything in your soup as long as you like the resulting soup, and when you feed it to someone else they receive the results of your choices, and they gain an understanding of you.

Conservatives fear empathy, and they’ve announced it in broad daylight. They fear it because its what erodes their movement. It’s what gives us the power to act against them. I don’t know where you’re located @Grumpyleb@lemmus.org, but I advise that everyone on earth is more connected to the resistance and danger of fascism even if they think they’re away from it. Learn some songs, make some soup. These are the most powerful pieces of propaganda in the face of the horrors of our lived reality. A family in Kyiv taught me in 2012 while they were hosting my boss that a war is fought with bullets and bombs, but it’s won with boycotts and boots. For 13 years I’ve carried this wisdom with me and now I’m sharing it with you and anyone else who finds this comment
