The government has proposed, starting this summer, to make it illegal for people in Sweden to pay someone to have sex or masturbate in front of a camera. One of the arguments for the bill is that platforms such as OnlyFans could become a gateway to prostitution. However, some of the platform’s creators argue that this bill will put them in a difficult position and, in the worst case, could cause them to lose their livelihood. Story by Luke Shrago.

Prostitution, the oldest business in the world, really shouldn’t be illegal.

Especially if there is a way to do it privately and safely away from actual people. This could just force people into actual prostitution who had no interest in doing it before due to lack of options.

I would be stunned if this bill passes.

It’s hard to get a prostitute to stop prostituting. Especially for the ones who chose out of desperation or were forced into it.

But you go after the john, who has money and probably something to lose, like a job or family, and you can scare them away.

Note: I’m against criminalizing prostitution, I’m just explaining their reasoning, not agreeing with it.

To pay or masturbate? So it will be ok to sell and not masturbate? Who defines the line from just touching to masturbate?

they’re extending swedish prostitution law to cover online content, which basically means it’s legal as long as it’s free.

there sure are some people in the riksdag trying to ban that too, but they are working on their own law.

but yeah, if this goes through it definitely sounds like buying porn would fall under the same banner as hiring a prostitute.
